Arab Singer Who Were Active In Their 70s

Warda

Warda of Algeria kept singing and looking good as she was 71 with the release of her last album in 2011. The legendary diva did also released a music video about hope. I enjoyed the album very much. I did grow up listening to her songs form the 80’s, and 90’s, so to hear her do a new album was a big deal for me. The late diva will be missed. Most people loved this comeback album, some hated on it due to Warda’s age, but will do do the same thing to a male singer?

Mohamed Rushdy

Mohamed Rushdy was a big hit in the 60s, and 70s and some part of the 80s. But he took a break and retired only to make a sudden comeback in 2003 with a new album. Nasr Mahrous and his label Free Music persuaded the iconic singer to record another album which he did. Not only did he recorded an album but she released a music video and released another album in 2004 “Qattir Al Hayah”. this was an appreciated comeback by all of fans for this lovable folksy Egyptian singers. He was 75 when he made his comeback.

Wadih El Safy
The legendary mountain voice from Lebanon never stopped singing, he kept on releasing hits and duets with other stars till his final days. He even made an appearance on Star Academy and headlined many concerts around the Arab world but mostly in Lebanon. The late legend passed away in 2013 and with it, Lebanon’s songs lost its campus. Wadih passed away in his 90’s and his voice has never lost its magic. El Safi toured the world, singing in many languages, including Arabic, French, Portuguese and Italian. There are many last songs of his that are lurking on the internet.

Mohamed Abdel Wahab
He did take a break from the music scene but he could not stay away from the love of his life which is music. So we saw him make a comeback in 1989 when he was at that time 87 years old. His song was a hit “Min Gheir Leeh” went to be an instant hit and become a reference song. That was not without controversy as some claimed this song was actually recorded in 1977 but then remastered and released in 1989

Mohamed Kandil
The cuddly and folksy Egyptian folk singer Mohamed Kandil did have an impressive career and a life lived to the fullest. Kandil retired and stopped recording songs for many years but in 2002 he came up at age 73 and released a track song for a TV drama. Not only did Kandil did the opening credit song and the closing one, but he also did a number of songs throughout the show. Kandil would pass away two years late. Supposedly Umm Kalthoum was among his fans.

I would also add two names Syrian Mayada El Henawy and Syrian Sabah Fakhry. They are both living legends who despite their age still perform and record new songs.
